Introducing The Nissan Micra

(Tue 02 Mar 10)

The fourth-generation Nissan Micra, a distinctly less bug-eyed device than the car it is shortly to replace, has been unveiled at the Geneva Show.

Nissan Micra 65.

Based on an all-new platform, it comes with a choice of just two engines - or, strictly speaking, just one engine, but in two forms. It's a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol unit which has not been used before, but is a cut-down version of the 1.6 already found in the Note and Qashqai.

In its more basic form, the 1.2 produces a maximum of 80bhp, and has a CO2 rating of 115g/km. But there is also a supercharged version which produces 97bhp. Obviously, supercharged Micras will be faster than standard ones, but thanks partly to the use of start/stop system for urban driving the supercharged cars are officially more economical and emit just 95g/km on the combined cycle.

The supercharged cars will therefore be exempt from annual VED payments, though they will undoubtedly be more expensive and will probably use more fuel in real-life motoring.

Both engines are available with a choice of five-speed manual and CVT automatic transmissions. Standard equipment on all models will include ABS, ESP, curtain airbags, pretensioner seatbelts and a Parking Space Measurement system with three modes - expert, normal and amateur! - from which you can choose according to confidence.

Sales of the new Micra will begin in Thailand this month, and the car will reach Europe in the autumn. UK pricing and further details will be announced nearer the time.
