(Wed 03 Mar 10) In the year it celebrates its 25th anniversary, Proton has put three closely-related concept cars on display at the Geneva Show. All of them are called Emas (which means "gold" in the Malay language, but also stands for Eco Mobility Advance Solution) and each has a different body style: the basic model (pictured below) is a five-door four-seat hatchback, the Emas Country is a three-door five-seater and the Emas3 is a city car with a three-plus-one seating arrangement.
All three were styled by ItalDesign Giugiaro, while the powertrain was developed by Lotus. It's a hybrid system, as almost everything is these days, and it includes a 51bhp 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine capable of running on petrol, ethanol, methanol or natural gas - clearly the Lotus "range extender" engine which has already been used in, among other things, the Jaguar Limo-Green prototype. There is no talk yet of the Emas going into production, but Proton describes the aim behind the project as being "to produce the global car for the world market in the future". |
