Audi R8 Becomes Even Faster
(Monday 30 July 2012)
The considerable number of revisions to the Audi R8 sports car for the 2013 model year include the introduction of the most powerful model yet.
The V10 plus uses the same 5.2-litre engine found in other R8s, but in this case it has been uprated to produce a maximum of 542bhp. With the new S tronic semi-automatic transmission (which we'll come to in a minute) it has a 0-62mph time of just 3.6 seconds, though for the range's ultimate top speed of 196mph you have to stick with the manual gearbox.
The V10 plus is available only in Coupé form, and is fitted as standard with the carbonfibre ceramic brake discs which are available as extra-cost options elsewhere in the range.
That S tronic transmission mentioned two paragraphs ago is a seven-speed unit which replaces the previous R tronic six-speed. Its effect, other than adding £2900 to the price of the car, is to take 0.3 seconds off the 0-62mph time, improve combined fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions by up to 22g/km, depending on model.
Several styling changes are also being introduced, and the 2013 cars all have LED headlights as standard. Priced from £91,575 (or, in the case of the V10 plus, from £124,675), it will be available to order in August, with UK deliveries due to start early next year.
