Audi RS 5 Cabriolet
(Friday 7 September 2012)
Audi's determination to find ever more niches in the market and sell cars in them has led to the introduction of a new high-performance drop-top.
The RS 5 Cabriolet uses the same drivetrain as the Coupé, with a 444bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine driving all four wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch semi-automatic S tronic gearbox. The extra strengthening required to restore body stiffness lost in the removal of a solid roof weighs the car down a bit, but it can still manage 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds (compared with 4.5 for the Coupé) and has a top speed of either 155mph or - if you're willing to pay extra for a slightly altered management system - 174mph.
The roof opens in 15 seconds and closes in 17, at speeds of up to 31mph in each case - and when folded down occupies 60 litres of the 380-litre luggage compartment.
The Cabriolet is due to go on sale here next spring. UK pricing has not yet been confirmed, but is due to be announced at about the time the car becomes available to order later this year.
