(Tue 13 Apr 10) "All in all, that was certainly the cleanest and quietest race lap I've ever driven," said former DTM (German Touring Car Championship) racer Thomas Jäger. Jäger had just driven an all-electric MINI E round the Nürburgring circuit in Germany the very respectable time of in 9 minutes 51.45 seconds, averaging 79mph and reaching a top speed of 117mph.
Admittedly, it wasn't a standard MINI E. It was lightened, it had a rollcage, and it was fitted with race-style tyres, brakes and suspension. But the 204bhp electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack were standard. Meanwhile, phase two of the UK MINI E trials is due to begin, and MINI is looking for 20 drivers in the Oxford, Newbury, Andover, Reading, Basingstoke, Maidenhead, Bracknell, Slough and West London areas to take part. This trial will start in September and last for six months, at a cost of £330 per month. If you're interested in taking part, there's an online application form at www.electricMINI.co.uk. |
