Volkswagen Shows Small SUV Concept

(Monday 22 October 2012)

Volkswagen Taigun.

Volkswagen's idea of a very small future SUV has made its first public appearance at the Sao Paulo Show. Based on the same platform used for the up!, but about a foot longer, the Taigun uses a turbocharged version of that car's one-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 108bhp and giving a 0-62mph time of 9.2 seconds and a top speed of 115mph.

It's a lot taller than the up! and has, at 280 litres, considerably more luggage space. Despite the looks, though, it doesn't have four-wheel drive, and possibly for that reason is described by VW as "very much a vehicle for the urban environment".

Volkswagen says it has not yet decided whether to put the Taigun into production, but will be paying attention to how the public responds to it.
