The revised Volkswagen Touareg is available to order now, and will start appearing in UK showrooms in October, priced from £38,255.

That money will buy you the entry-level SE which, like most Touaregs, uses a 237bhp three-litre TDI turbo diesel engine. The higher-specification Escape and Altitude are diesel-powered too, though the Altitude is also available, for £56,530, with a 335bhp 4.2-litre V8 diesel.

It's not the most powerful Touareg, though. That honour goes to the £54,995 Hybrid, whose supercharged three-litre petrol engine and electric motor have a combined output of 375bhp, giving the car a 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds. Despite this, according to the official EU test it's marginally more economical, and emits less CO2, than any of the diesels, with figures of 34.4mpg and 193g/km respectively.
