2015 Volkswagen California van unveiled

Known for its practicality, luxury and go-anywhere attitude, the Volkswagen California camper van is adding another chapter to its books as it enters its fourth-generation.

Hailed by Volkswagen as “the ultimate home from home” and based on the recently revealed VW Transporter T6, the California brings a host of improvements over the previous model, including more efficient engines, better technology and a new adaptive suspension.

On the engine front, Volkswagen has managed to make efficiency improvements of up to 15 per cent. Options in the range include an entry-level 2.0-litre TDI diesel producing 101bhp and a 2.0-litre TSI petrol producing 201bhp. These engines come mated to a DSG automatic box with 4MOTION four wheel-drive.

The availability of these engines is split between the two available trim levels, with Beach models gaining the diesel and Ocean models the petrol.

In terms of new equipment, Volkswagen has completely revamped the infotainment set-up and added a selection of new safety assist features. These include Automatic Post-Collision Braking, Brake Assist and Driver Alert.

When it comes to being a ‘portable home’, the California can sleep four occupants and, on Ocean models, a fully-functional kitchen that comes with a 42-litre fridge, stainless steel sink and twin-burner hob.

Price and speciation details for the new Volkswagen California will be an announced at a later date.
