2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia saloon breaks cover

Alfa Romeo’s all-new compact executive saloon, the Giulia, has been officially revealed ahead of its launch in early 2016. Rivals will include the BMW 3 Series and the Jaguar XE.

This is the first car from Alfa Romeo to enter the compact executive sector since the 159 saloon, which ended production back in 2011. One major difference with the new Giulia is that instead of using front-wheel drive it will be available with either rear-wheel drive as standard or four-wheel drive for certain variants.

The first official images show that the five-door Giulia features LED headlamps, large protruding wheel arches and a V-shaped front grille which is an Alfa trademark.

Only the most powerful engine in the Giulia range has been confirmed so far. The Quadrifoglio version features a 503bhp 3.0-litre V6 Bi-turbo petrol engine, which cements it as a rival to the BMW M3 and the Mercedes C63 AMG.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio is more powerful and quicker than virtually all its main rivals. It will go from zero to 62mph in just 3.9 seconds.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio also carries some aggressive, sporty design touches such as a lip spoiler and an active front splitter for improved aerodynamics. The wheels are also reminiscent of those found on the Alfa Romeo 4C sports car.

Equipment for the Giulia is unconfirmed, but the interior is confirmed to feature materials such as carbon fibre and real wood. Alfa Romeo also say the Giulia’s steering wheel will be small in a similar fashion to a Formula 1 car.
