2016 Fiat 500 receives facelift and new tech

Fiat has released details and images of its updated 500 city car. It features styling changes, as well as new luxury technology and updated engines. On sale this September, the updated Fiat 500 range is priced from £10,890.

The latest changes aim to keep the Fiat 500 fresh in the face of rivals which include the latest MINI Hatch and the recently rebranded DS 3.

Exterior design updates include redesigned headlamps with new integrated LED daytime running lights. There’s a redesigned chrome front-grille, redesigned LED taillights shaped into a ring design and new bumpers.

Inside, meanwhile, the 2016 Fiat 500 has a new dashboard layout that’s now completed by a new Uconnect infotainment system with a five-inch touchscreen. How many functions the Uconnect device supports depends on the trim level. For the standard Pop trim, Uconnect supports USB/Auxiliary connection.

When picking the range-toppping Lounge trim it also supports DAB radio, Bluetooth, TomTom sat-nav and smartphone integration. Lounge trim also gets a seven-inch TFT display screen that can give details on the Uconnect’s functions and driving modes.

Other interior changes include improved materials and upholstery and extra airbags.

All engines in the 2016 Fiat 500 range have been updated so that they are more efficient. From launch there’s a 68bhp 1.2-litre petrol and 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol – both available with stop-start engine technology. The TwinAir can produce 85bhp or 105bhp and records up to a combined 74.3mpg, while CO2 emissions are from just 90g/km.

The updated 500’s engine range will expand before this year ends with the arrival of the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel, which will emit just 89g/km in CO2. Also arriving later this year will be an ‘Eco’ version of the 1.2-litre petrol which will feature various efficiency-focused modifications to keep CO2 emissions at just 99g/km.

More details on pricing for the 2016 Fiat 500 range will be confirmed later this year.
