2016 Mercedes E-Class to debut all-new diesel engine

The new Mercedes E-Class saloon, going on sale this spring, will be first car to feature the German manufacturer’s new four-cylinder diesel. This unit marks the debut of a ground-breaking family of engines.

Most frugal diesel for E-Class

The first all-aluminium four-cylinder diesel from Mercedes, this engine will feature in the E 220 d specification for the new E-Class range.

The 2.0-litre unit emits just 102g/km of CO2, which is less compared to the equivalent engines used by the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Jaguar XF. The Mercedes diesel is also more efficient than its equivalent rivals, officially averaging 72.4mpg whereas other diesel-run executive saloons offer a figure below 70mpg.

Not only is the unit more efficient than other Mercedes diesel engines and compared to rivals, it’s also more powerful than its predecessors. The E 220 d produces 192bhp and 400Nm of torque.

V6 diesel coming too

Joining this entry-level diesel in the new E-Class saloon range will be a 3.0-litre V6 diesel for the 350 d specification. The V6 produces 254bhp, officially averages 55.4mpg and emits 133g/km of CO2. This engine will arrive to the UK market later than the 2.0-litre diesel, during summer 2016 to be more precise.

The new E-Class saloon will be available from launch in either the SE or AMG Line trims. Standard kit will include sat-nav, parking sensors, climate control and heated seats. The E 220d will also sport 17-inch alloy wheels while the 350 d will use 18-inch alloys.
