2016 Mercedes E-Class unveiled

First official images and details of the fifth-generation Mercedes E-Class saloon have been revealed ahead of the executive car’s first public appearance at next week’s Detroit Motor Show.

The design changes for the new E-Class mean its appearance is very similar to the latest C-Class and S-Class models. Highlights of the new E-Class design include the multibeam LED headlamps and a more curvaceous shape for the rear end, complete with a subtle spoiler.

Using the new MRA platform also used for the latest S-Class, the new E-Class is longer and wider than its predecessor but also 100kg lighter. All of that should mean that car will offer more cabin space all-round than before, as well as sharper handling and improved efficiency.

Inside, the new E-Class interior has a similar look to the latest S-Class, albeit with less standard luxury kit in comparison. The E-Class interior does still feature multiple screens though, which can be configured to display thing such as sat-nav instructions or different vehicle settings.

Luxury features the Mercedes saloon is set to offer includes certain autonomous driving aids, which will let the car guide itself around motorway bends and maintain a safe distance from the car in the front.

Engines for the fifth-generation E-Class will reportedly include some plug-in hybrid options. Efficiency won’t be the only focus, however, as an E63 AMG variant with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 is also expected to join the line-up. The AMG could offer as much as 600bhp, making it one of the most powerful performance saloons ever made, but this derivative reportedly won’t join the new E-Class range until 2017.
