2016 World Car of the Year finalists announced

The three finalists in contention for the 2016 World Car of the Year award have been confirmed, and they are the Audi A4, Mazda MX-5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

News on this year’s finalists was confirmed during this week’s Geneva Motor Show. The winner of this major accolade will be announced during this year’s New York Auto Show, which runs between the 25th March and 3rd April.

This year’s World Car Awards is overseen by a judging panel comprised of 73 prominent motoring journalists from around the world.

The 2016 World Car of the Year awards comprises of five categories in total, including the main accolade. The finalists for the other categories have also been confirmed this week, including for the 2016 World Luxury Car award. Contending for this honour will be the Audi Q7, BMW 7 Series and Volvo XC90.

Competing for the 2016 World Performance Car award will be the Audi R8, Honda Civic Type R and the Mercedes AMG C 63 Coupe. The finalists for the World Green Car accolade meanwhile include the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai, along with the Toyota Prius hybrid and Chevrolet Volt.

Lastly, the three finalists for this year’s World Car Design of the Year award include the Jaguar XE saloon, and Mazda’s MX-5 and CX-3.

Earlier on during this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the Vauxhall Astra was announced as the winner of the 2016 European Car of the Year accolade. Despite this achievement though, there’s ultimately no place for Vauxhall’s latest family car in any of the World Car of the Year award categories.
