2017 BMW 5 Series Touring is lighter and more practical

The BMW 5 Series Touring has been unveiled ahead of the premium estate's launch this summer.

BMW has revealed its new-generation 5 Series Touring at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and it’s the most practical estate car the German premium brand has created yet.

Expected to go on sale this June, the new 5 Series Touring will start pricing at £38,385, which is £2,360 more than the saloon version. BMW expects the Touring to outsell the 5 Series saloon in Britain.

To give it the edge over rivals such as the Volvo V90, Audi A6 Avant and Mercedes E-Class estate, BMW has made its 5 Series Touring 100kg lighter than before. The new Touring is also longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, with the wheelbase stretched by 7mm.

These increased dimensions benefit passengers as there’s now more head, shoulder and legroom for them. Three child seats can now be easily attached across the rear bench. Boot capacity has also had a small increase and now stands at 570 litres in total with the rear seats up, or 1,700 litres when the back seats are folded.

Standard kit includes a power-operated tailgate for easier boot access, an 8-8-inch infotainment touchscreen with BMW’s latest iDrive software and a wi-fi hotspot plus Apple CarPlay support.

Engines available include two diesels and two petrol units. The diesels are a 188bhp 2.0-litre unit for the 520d and a 261bhp 3.0-litre engine for the 530d. These officially average 65.7mpg and 53.3mpg respectively and four-wheel drive is available optionally for the 530d.

The petrol units are a 248bhp 2.0-litre engine for the 530i, while the 540i xDrive gets a 335bhp 3.0-litre engine. The latter offers the quickest performance figures with the 0-62mph sprint covered in just 5.1 seconds.

These engines come with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox as standard, apart from the 520d which uses a six-speed manual gearbox instead. But even the 520d can be fitted with the automatic ‘box as a paid option.

The safety driving features available include cross traffic warning, lane control assist and collision and pedestrian warning with sensor-based city braking.
