2017 Volvo XC60 mid-size SUV unmasked prior to summer launch

Volvo has properly revealed its new XC60 for 2017 which features a more luxurious and practical cabin plus new semi-autonomous safety aids.

After a series of recent teaser images, Volvo has finally revealed its new XC60 mid-size SUV in full at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

Expected to arrive this summer, the new XC60 will take on other premium SUVs like the Jaguar F-PACE, Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.

The new XC60 uses the same platform as the latest XC90 SUV, but Volvo are keen to point out how this car is not just simply a downscaled XC60.

While the new XC60 has similar design features to its larger counterpart, including the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights, the XC60 has a noticeably lower driver position and some sportier detailing around the body.

Inside, the XC60 interior is very reminiscent of the XC90, but given how distinctive and luxurious that SUV is inside, this is understandable. The cabin of the new XC60 includes an eight-inch touchscreen and lots of lightly-coloured soft-touch trim panels.

Since the XC60 is longer and wider than before, and has a 91mm-longer wheelbase, there’s more head and legroom for passengers, particularly at the rear.

Turning attention to engines, the XC60 range includes a 187bhp D4 diesel and a 232bhp D5 diesel – units familiar to other recent Volvos. Also, joining the XC60 range is a T5 petrol with 251bhp and a T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a petrol engine and electric motor. The hybrid offers 401bhp in total and a full-electric driving range of 35 miles.

All powertrains utilise all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. For a more comfortable ride, air suspension is available optionally.

As you’d expect with any modern Volvo nowadays, there’s a raft of safety kit onboard. The new XC60 includes rear cross traffic alert and Pilot Assist. The latter allows the Volvo to automatically maintain a consistent distance to the car in front and can steer the car automatically while sticking to a single lane.

The XC60 also has a new autonomous safety feature called City Safety which can actively steer you away from potential accidents.

Pricing for the XC60 is likely to start from about £35,000
