2018 BMW 8 Series: Old vs New compared

The new BMW 8 Series is finally here and it’s the return of a legend! Find out just exactly what’s changed for BMW’s luxury sports car.

This model has been teased for a little while now through testing photos and the reveal of the race car version, but the BMW 8 Series has finally been shown off for the first time.

Some 19 years after the last version of the coupe was built, it makes a stylish and dynamic return, and comes with sharp touches, lots of tech and a duo of capable engines.

But how much has changed in between those generations, and how has the 8 Series improved? We take a look…

Modernised looks

The old and new 8 Series model share a similar wedge shape, but the 2018 version comes with a more modernised look – as to be expected. While the first generation came with a retro design that fitted in well with the times, the second generation takes that to a new level and incorporates all of the brand’s latest design ideologies. The large kidney grille is paired with muscular body lines and simple lighting that fit in with the front and rear ends. The new version will certainly be one of the best looking cars on the road.

Crammed with tech

The interior looks the part too, and features a cockpit that comes with two large displays to keep the driver in the know. Behind the steering wheel is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that can display the satellite navigation and other important info, while the central 10.25-inch touchscreen works superbly in tandem with the other screen.

To ensure the ultimate driving experience, the 8 Series comes with integral active steering and optional active roll stabilisation, which help the 8 Series to be as nimble and dynamic as possible. Driver assistance systems fitted include active cruise control, steering and lane control assistant, lane change and departure warning, side collision protection and crossing traffic warning.

The old model could never match this, but at the time of its release it was streets ahead of its rivals. Stability control, traction control, speed-sensitive power steering and damper control were fitted underneath the skin, whilst models also came with an on-board computer and electrically adjustable controls - well ahead of its time.

Two engines and both offer plenty of punch

To give customers choice, BMW can fit either the 840d six-cylinder diesel unit that produces 315bhp and 680Nm of torque, or the top-end M850i 523bhp V8 petrol engine. Both are limited to a top speed of 155mph and can get from 0-60mph in under five seconds – but the M850i version is unquestionably the performance option. It can sprint to 60mph in 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 189mph when the limiter is raised as part of the M Driver’s Pack. Both units are paired to an eight-speed sports automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive setup.

This follows on from the first generation’s extensive range of petrol options, including the range-topping 5.6-litre V12 fitted to the 850CSi. Although it had that large engine up front, the sprint to 60mph for the old 8 Series was a comparative jog at 6.8 seconds - mainly because the car weighed a lot more and technology was just not as advanced. Still, the new model carries on the tradition of power and performance.
