2019 BMW 8 Series Convertible – the stand-out features

We take a quick look at the latest addition to BMW’s flagship series, which is a stylish soft-top that comes with the same sporty package as the coupe.

Following the reveal of the latest 8 Series earlier this year, BMW has acted fast by introducing the second version in its line-up – the 8 Series Convertible.

As the flagship drop-top, the 8 Series Convertible is likely to be the choice of those wanting open-air driving in supreme comfort – but what does it have to offer?

We take a look and see what’s what…

Elegant looks

It’s safe to say that the Coupe ensured that the whole 8 Series line-up would be stylish, and the Convertible certainly is an attractive model. With the roof up, the fabric roof incorporates into the model well – but it’s with the roof down where the Convertible looks best. From the windscreen back is one long, elegant line that emphasises the low-slung nature of the model, while the sleek front-end helps show of the car’s sporty character. The roof only takes 15 seconds to go up or down, and it can be moved at speeds up to 31mph.

Dynamic setup

The case with many coupes when they are converted to convertibles is that they can feel a bit wobbly when the roof is taken off due to reduced rigidity. BMW has combatted this on the 8 Series by adding unique bracing under the body that will help with cornering and stability. Add to that the vehicle’s low ride height, adaptive suspension and integral active steering (as well as the option to add a rear-mounted electronic differential lock) and the 8 Series Convertible should be as much fun to drive as the Coupe.

The Convertible is also fitted with the same engines as the Coupe – meaning customers have the choice of the M850i petrol and the 840d diesel that are both paired to an eight-speed automatic and the xDrive all-wheel drive setup.

High-end equipment

As the flagship model, you would expect the 8 Series to come with a high-level of equipment. The centre piece of the cockpit is the 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen that can also be controlled by gestures, the iDrive dial and BMW’s voice-activated personal assistant. The Live Cockpit Professional replaces the standard instrument dials and is a 10.25-inch screen that provides clear readouts. A head-up display is also fitted.

Customers will also find leather upholstery throughout, as well as neck heaters when you have the roof down, wind deflector, automatic boot lid, a Bowers & Wilkins speaker system and chrome detailing.

Pricing for the 8 Series Convertible is yet to be revealed, but it will be making its market debut in March 2019.
