2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE unveiled

Using a world-first active suspension system and improved driver assistance systems, the GLE comes with seven seats for the first time.

Mercedes has taken the covers off the latest version of the GLE, with the second generation model coming with new tech and design features.

The new GLE is 80mm longer than before and includes the grille design first seen on the X-Class pick-up, with Mercedes ensuring it comes with increased presence on the road. Other design elements are in-line with recent Mercedes models.

In a move that brings the GLE up against the BMW X5 and Audi Q7, Mercedes has added a third row of seats to make it a seven-seater. The boot space is larger, too, with the rear now offering 825 litres when in the five-seat layout – 125 litres up on the first generation. The second row of seats is also electronically adjustable.

The centrepiece of the cockpit is the 12.3-inch touchscreen display, which employs the brand’s new MBUX infotainment system that first appeared on the latest A-Class. The instruments are also displayed on an LED screen of the same size behind the steering wheel. A head-up display is also fitted.

Launch models will be fitted with a 48v mild-hybrid powertrain that uses a six-cylinder petrol engine alongside the electrical system, which produces 384bhp. Mercedes said that diesel units and a long-range hybrid option will come later in this GLE’s timeline, although details are yet to be confirmed.

All-wheel drive will be fitted to all engines, which can come in a fully-variable guise if the optional ‘Offroad’ pack is chosen.

A big development with the GLE is the all-new E-Active Body Control system, which is a new suspension system that controls on the damping and springs on each wheel to fight against any roll, pitch and squat to make the GLE more comfortable.

Other safety systems include Active Tailback Assist that helps out in stop-start traffic and the Active Brake Assist gaining the ‘Turn off’ function, which brakes the car if oncoming traffic is detected while turning.

The new GLE will be debuting at the 2018 Paris Motor Show this October, with the model expected to on sale early on in 2019. Pricing and specifications for the UK version are yet to be confirmed.
