The upcoming sports car will maintain the heritage of its older generations by being fitted with the unit and rear-wheel drive setup.

Toyota has confirmed that the soon-to-be-revealed Supra sports car will be fitted with a front-mounted straight-six engine and rear-wheel drive.

This maintains the traditions of the previous Supra models, which were all built with the same engine-drivetrain layout.

A prototype of the two-door coupe will be making its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, and will be driven up the event’s hill climb by the Supra project’s chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, and development driver Herwig Daenens.

The production version of the Supra was teased at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in the form of the Gazoo Racing Supra Racing Concept and the model was the first appearance of the Supra moniker since 2002 when the most recent generation ceased production.

Developed in conjunction with BMW, who will be producing its new Z4 convertible on the same chassis and in the same factory, Toyota expects the new Supra to be on sale in the first half of 2019.

Toyota will also be taking the Le Mans-winning No. 8 TS050 Hybrid race car and the Gazoo Racing Supra Racing Concept to the annual Goodwood event, which takes place between July 12 and 15.
