2019 Volvo S60: Here's what we can expect

With the Swedish brand releasing the new sports saloon, we take a look and see what you will find on the 2019 S60.

Volvo has made its reputation on building well-designed cars with high levels of safety and quality.

The current crop is no different, and the latest addition to the range – the S60 – is set to take on the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class.

Coming in a handsome package, there is plenty to marvel at with the new saloon – but what will you be able to find on the third generation of the compact executive model?

Quality powertrains

For the first time, Volvo won’t be offering a new model with a diesel engine as the Swedish brand moves towards an electrified future. So customers will have the choice of two pure petrol engines in the form of the T5 and T6, while also being able to choose from two plug-in hybrid petrols.

The T6 and T8 Twin Engine models are both turbocharged – with the T8 also being supercharged – and will come with four-wheel drive thanks to the petrol and electric power offerings. Both models will be able to go more than 25 miles on electric power alone for zero-emission driving. For those wanting extra oomph from their S60, a Polestar performance tuning pack is provided, which increases the powertrain’s output and upgrades the brakes, suspension and ECU.

High-end safety

As you would expect from a Volvo, the S60 comes with the latest driver assistance and safety systems – with the City Safety pack fitted as standard. That features automatic emergency braking and collision avoidance to avoid pedestrians, cyclists and large animals, as well as preventing oncoming collisions.

Other systems that can be fitted to the S60 include the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous setup that can do most driving functions up to 80mph, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation and cross traffic alert. The structure the S60 is also one of the safest around, providing a robust cage in the case of an accident. It’s so safe in fact, that Euro NCAP gave the S60 a full five-star rating after going through its stringent tests.

Supreme comfort

Volvos are well-known for having one of the most comfortable rides around, and the S60 will be continuing that trend. With front occupants getting figure-hugging seats, passengers in the rear will find they have plenty of leg and headroom to get comfortable. Upholstered in either leather or cloth, there is a lot of cushioning provided in all seating.

Besides that, people inside the S60 will be entertained thanks to the easy-to-use Sensus infotainment setup with nine-inch portrait touchscreen that offers wireless smartphone pairing, satellite navigation and DAB radio, while being paired to high quality sound systems from the likes of Harman Kardon and Bowers & Wilkins.
