2020 BMW 5 Series set to get cleaner with new mild-hybrid technology

The new form of electrification is one of many changes being introduced to the BMW range.

BMW has announced that selected versions of its 5 Series Saloon and Touring will be available with mild-hybrid technology from the end of this year.

From November, the popular 520d, which utilises a 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine, will come with a mild-hybrid system that aims to improve throttle response and efficiency.

Joining the 530e plug-in hybrid, the mild-hybrid setup features a 48V starter-generator, as well as an additional battery that recuperates energy when the car is decelerating or braking. This energy can then be used to power electric vehicle functions, as well as providing additional power.

It also reduces fuel consumption, too, with the engine automatically switching off when coasting, and then switching on again as soon as the acceleration pedal is pressed again. BMW promises the process will be very smooth.

BMW is a little later to the game with this mild-hybrid technology than most, as it’s been widely available across rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz for some time. However, you could argue that BMW was ahead in terms of EVs and plug-in hybrids next to those firms.

As part of autumn 2019 updates for the BMW range, other models have also been enhanced, too.

Some of the main differences are on the range-topping SUVs – the X5, X6 and X7, which are now offered with new customisation options on the interior and exterior of the car, as part of BMW’s ‘Individual’ programme. This unlocks a new range of colours, interior materials and trim finishes, to name but a few features.

The new four-door 8 Series Gran Coupe will also be offered with a new carbon ‘M’ roof, which can be complimented by carbon accents elsewhere on the car.
