2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe has now been revealed

Four-door 8 Series variant blends four-door practicality with GT styling and driving dynamics.

BMW has lifted the covers on the new 8 Series Gran Coupe.

It comes as no surprise that the firm has released a four-door variant of its 8 Series, having showcased the concept last year in Gran Coupe form – but that doesn’t make it any less exciting.

Taking the styling of the coupe — long bonnet, sloping roofline and dramatic design details in all — its wheelbase is lengthened by 201mm to accommodate a rear set of doors while also improving legroom for those in the back. The car itself is also 30mm wider and 61mm taller.

Despite the extra heft, BMW says the car’s driving dynamics remain on-par as the two-door variant. It claims to have managed this feat by retuning the car’s Adaptive M suspension system and, for all-wheel-drive xDrive variants, its Integral Active Steering technology.

The Gran Coupe will be offered in three guises that reflects the base car’s launch line-up — 840i, M850i xDrive and 840d xDrive — with power sent to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Expect to hear more on an M8 Gran Coupe in the near future, too.

Inside the cabin, design changes for the Gran Coupe haven’t been revolutionary. It remains typically 8 Series — adorned with premium materials, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. There have been some revisions though — with the centre console now stretching further back, which incorporates two USB ports and climate functions for those in the rear.

Speaking of which, this car can technically seat five — though BMW calls it a ‘4+1’, saying the middle rear seat is best reserved for short journeys. Boot space is also increased by 20 litres to 440 in total.

Order books for the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe are now open, with prices starting at £69,340. Deliveries are expected to begin from September.
