2020 BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe unveiled as glamourous four-door sports car

The Gran Coupe joins the Coupe and Convertible version of its M8.

BMW has expanded its high-performance offering with the introduction of the M8 Gran Coupe — adding some practicality to a high-performance machine.

Adding a second set of doors to the Gran Coupe could be used as a family car, albeit a particularly hot one, thanks to a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 – BMW M’s most powerful production engine to date. Producing 616bhp and 750Nm of torque. That means 0-60mph is met in just three seconds, along with a claimed top speed that’s electronically limited to 155mph.

Meanwhile xDrive all-wheel-drive (though with a bias to the rear wheels) and an eight speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox helps to transfer that power to the tarmac.

To separate it from the regular 8 Series Gran Coupe, BMW has fitted the M8 with an upgraded cooling system and a sharpened chassis. Electronically controlled dampers are also fitted as standard, while performance brakes have also been fitted to provide the ultimate stopping power.

The Gran Coupe is 23cm longer than its two-door siblings, with the wheelbase being 20cm longer – all of that going into improved rear legroom. The 440-litre boot is ample for daily duties, too.

Standard kit includes adaptive LED headlights, a head-up display, heated seats and a panoramic parking camera, to name but a few features.

The M8 is on sale now, with prices starting from £120,935 – making it the cheapest M8 variant on offer. Unlike other countries, in the UK the M8 is only offered in top-spec Competition form.

First deliveries are promised in early 2020. BMW will also offer just five First Edition models, which come painted in a BMW Individual colour, known as Aurora Diamond Green, along with bronze accents.
