2020 Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid revealed

French SUV gains plug-in powertrain — with 31 miles of electric-only driving possible.

Citroen has supercharged the appeal of its C5 Aircross with the addition of a new plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Simply named the C5 Aircross Hybrid, this variant of the SUV links a PureTech 180 petrol engine up with an 80Kw electric motor. In total, this powertrain outputs 222bhp and 320Nm of torque, delivered to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Citroen says the SUV will return 166mpg in mixed driving conditions in Hybrid guise, while emitting just 39g/km in CO2 emissions. Adding to that is the ability to drive on electric power alone for up to 31 miles between charges.

The C5 Aircross Hybrid is also equipped with an artificial sound that’s played when driving up to 19mph on electric power, with the goal of alerting pedestrians of the car’s presence.

Though boot space has dipped slightly with the introduction of batteries, the C5 Aircross retains an impressive load area of 460 litres — which can rise to 600 litres depending on the positioning of the rear seats.

When connected to a 7kW wallbox charger, recharging the cell takes under two hours from flat to full as a result of the car’s on-board 7.4kW charger. Plugging in via a regular three-pin socket takes six hours, with a cable for this available optionally.

Pricing for the Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid kicks off at £35,340, with the French firm taking expressions of interest through its website. First deliveries are scheduled for mid-2020.
