Ford has revealed the latest generation of its Kuga SUV, marking the introduction of a new platform for the firm.
Taking on Ford’s latest corporate design — as seen on the most recent Focus and Fiestas — the Kuga boasts three electrified variants at launch, ushering in the next era of hybrids for the brand.
Headlining is a plug-in hybrid option (PHEV). This powertrain is combined of a 2.5-litre petrol engine and a 10.3 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed 235mpg and CO2 emissions of 29g/km, as well as over 31 miles of pure electric driving range. Regenerative braking features on this variant too, and the battery pack can be fully charged in four hours from a regular plug socket.
Next up is a mild-hybrid option, which sees a belt-driven generator strapped onto a 2.0-litre diesel engine for the sake of efficiency, while a regular hybrid powertrain also joins the fray. Those not quite ready for the electric revolution will still have the choice of two conventional diesel engines, plus a petrol variant too.
How about that new platform, then? Well, Ford calls it C2 and claims it delivers 10 per cent more torsional stiffness and a 90kg weight reduction compared to the old Kuga’s underpinnings. As a result, expect more interior space and a more involving drive than before.

Full UK market specifications are a while off being confirmed, but three trims will be available — Titanium, ST-Line and Vignale. As with the rest of the Ford line-up, Titanium will serve as the entry-level option in this case, ST-Line presents a ‘sportier’ choice and Vignale aims to deliver on luxury.
No word yet on pricing or delivery dates, but a late 2019 launch is likely. Keep your eyes peeled…
