2020 Ford Mustang-inspired electric SUV teased

The all-electric model will take styling elements from the world-famous sports car, with it set to be on sale in 2020.

Ford has released a teaser image of an all-new electric crossover that draws inspiration from the Mustang sports car.

The as-yet-unnamed concept has been developed by Ford’s Team Edison electric mobility division and although not much of the vehicle is visible, you can see the three vertical brake lights on either side – exactly like the Mustang.

The preview image also shows a sloping roofline that is similar to the fastback – meaning the crossover will almost certainly mix coupe and SUV styling when it is unveiled.

This is due to be the first car from Ford solely designed to be electric, with the American manufacturer hoping to provide it with 300 miles of range when it is set to launch in 2020.

Darren Palmer, Ford Team Edison product development director, said: “The electric vehicle market overall is accelerating at an exponential rate, with each individual market presenting its own unique challenges.

“It’s an exciting time to be bringing forward a winning portfolio of electrified vehicles. My team and I are both proud of and energized by the company’s $11 billion investment to bring 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles through 2022. All of us here have unknowingly prepared for this our entire careers.”

Palmer added: “Electric vehicle customers are buying into the future and our team is 100 percent focused on not only delivering vehicles they will love, but providing an entire electric vehicle ecosystem that works flawlessly.

“It’s exciting to know that my stint leading development of the next-generation Mustang actually comes full circle as we get ready to launch our electric Mustang-inspired utility. I, for one, can’t wait to have one — side-by-side — with my Shelby GT350R.”
