When it comes to choosing your next SUV, a brand that’s probably not on your shortlist is Alfa Romeo.
This Italian marque is best-known for its sports cars and sleek saloons, and not so much for its SUVs. However, since 2017, Alfa Romeo has had the Stelvio – a glamorous mid-size SUV that’s a great alternative to the likes of the Audi Q5 and BMW X3.

It’s great fun to drive
Driving pleasure isn’t something that’s particularly common in the SUV world, so if you’re wanting a high-riding model that you can enjoy being behind the wheel of, the Stelvio is the car to have.
It was designed to be fun to drive from the offset – sitting at the dynamic end of the spectrum, and it certainly feels that way. There’s limited body roll and the steering is quick and sharp, which makes this Alfa Romeo feel eager – all of which is a rarity from an SUV.
It’s one of the best-looking SUVs around
Alfa Romeo arguably makes some of the most glamorous cars around, with its saloons and coupes being some of the best-looking models ever produced, at least to our eyes.
But transferring sleek lines into an SUV body can be tough, and it’s why plenty of models in this class are not what you’d call pretty. However, the designers at Alfa Romeo have done a superb job with the Stelvio. It keeps all of the firm’s trademark cues – such as the triangle grille, angled headlights and offset number plate, and looks unlike any other crossover and SUV.
No shortage of tech
While you might think Alfa Romeo would lag behind other premium brands on the technology front, this latest Stelvio shows this is far from the case.
It’s particularly noticeable when it comes to driver assistance technology where the Stelvio has really upped its game. It features kit such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and a system that monitors how much attention the driver is paying.
Meanwhile in the cabin you get a large 8.8-inch touchscreen, while a range of additional remote services are available through Alfa Romeo Connect.
Hot Quadrifoglio version available
Given the Stelvio is such a brilliant SUV to drive in the first place, it makes a great deal of sense to offer it with a sportier derivative, which is what you get with the Quadrifoglio version.
Featuring the same 503bhp 2.9-litre V6 engine as the stunning Giulia Quadrifoglio saloon, this is one of the most capable SUVs around, with the ability to thrill like few other SUVs can manage.
Plenty of trim and engine choice
While the Quadrifoglio version is the one we’d all aspire to own, there are still plenty of choices in the normal Stelvio range that are great to drive.
With four trim levels on offer, along with petrol and diesel engines and the option to have rear- or all-wheel-drive, there is no shortage of choice with this Alfa Romeo, meaning there is a Stelvio to suit all SUV tastes.
