5 reasons why the BMW 4 Series Convertible is the ideal summer drop-top

With summer on the way, now could be the idea to plan for some drop-top motoring

With lockdown restrictions hopefully set to ease in the coming months and warmer weather on the horizon, now could be a better time than ever to consider getting a convertible for the summer.

There are a range of routes you can go down (budget depending), from something fun and affordable like the Mazda MX-5 through to luxurious and refined cars like the Bentley Convertible GTC.

But for 2021 there’s a new drop-top we reckon you should consider – the new BMW 4 Series Convertible. Here’s why…

It moves to a more stylish fabric roof

For a time, more manufacturers were using metal-folding roofs for their convertibles, and though they did bring greater refinement, it was at the expense of weight and style.

But for the latest 4 Series Convertible, BMW has reverted back to the traditional soft top, which the firm says “blends the strengths of a retractable hard-top and the traditional appeal of a fabric roof”. It certainly looks better than ever, and is also a remarkable 40 per cent lighter than the outgoing model’s roof. It can also fold down or up in as little as 18 seconds, and at speeds up to 31mph.

It should prove fantastic to drive

While we’re yet to actually get behind the wheel of the new drop-top 4 Series, we have high hopes for it given how impressive the Coupe model has proven to perform in this respect.

The Coupe has a great balance – especially when in rear-wheel-drive form – and is one of the best cars in its class to drive. Given the Convertible’s close connection, and its lighter roof this time around, it should also excel in this area.

An engine to suit all

Choice is absolutely key on the latest 4 Series Convertible, and there really is an engine option available to suit most.

This includes everything from efficient diesel options, which are capable of a fuel economy figure of 60mpg, through to powerful petrol options. And it’s the mild-hybrid M440i xDrive that sits right at the top of the 4 Series range – with a 369bhp 3.0-litre petrol engine allowing this drop-top to reach 0-60mph in just 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph.

Bigger boot is better for summer getaways

You might not consider buying a convertible for its practicality, but if you intend to use it on a regular basis or for longer trips away, it’s a factor you might need to think about.

And though the outgoing BMW 4 Series impressed in this area, this new model is even better. While the maximum boot space increases to 385 litres (the same as a Volkswagen Golf, for example), it’s the room when the convertible roof is lowered that’s the biggest change – increasing from 220 to 305 litres.

The 4 Series Convertible also offers seating for four adults, too, meaning longer road trips could be on the cards.

Very generously equipped

Though the 4 Series Convertible is not the cheapest car around, you certainly get plenty for your money.

All models now come in the more stylish M Sport trims, with equipment levels being very generous – including 18-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, leather upholstery, digital dials and a large touchscreen all being included as standard.

The new BMW 4 Series Convertible is on sale now, with prices starting from £45,875.
