5 reasons why the new BMW X6 is 2020’s boldest SUV

Looking for an SUV that makes you stand out from the crowd? Here’s why you should consider the latest X6

Ever since BMW introduced its X6 back in 2008, it’s a large SUV that’s proven to divide opinion.

As the first ‘coupe’ SUV to go on sale, though, it’s paved the way for a whole host of other firms to launch similar vehicles – including Audi, Mercedes and Porsche. The latest model remains as distinctive as ever, with BMW introducing a number of touches to ensure it stands out from the crowd.

Here’s why it’s 2020’s boldest SUV

It now features a grille that lights up

BMW is known for its instantly recognisable ‘kidney grille’, which has become even more prominent over the years. The X6’s large grille stands out already as it is, but BMW has taken things up another level by fitting the model with an optional illuminated grille.

It lights up as soon as the vehicle is locked or unlocked, and works in tandem with the adaptive LED headlights, which are fitted as standard. You can also light it up manually, and it can even be used while driving. In short, it gives the X6 a road presence that few models can get close to.

It’s available with BMW’s most popular engine to date

Hot ‘M’ versions geared towards those wanting ultimate performance have been staples of the previous two generations of the X6. And now for this new model, buyers can already get hold of the latest version, which features the most powerful engine to be fitted in a BMW M model. It’s the same unit that you’ll find in the M8 supercar, too.

The engine itself is a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 that produces 616bhp and 750Nm of torque. That means, even despite the X6’s weight, that the model can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.6 seconds and sprint to a top speed of 180mph, where permitted, if you have the ‘M Driver’s Package’ option box ticked.

You’re able to unlock it using your phone

Bragging rights matter on large premium SUVs, and thanks to the range of technology on the BMW X6, you’re unlikely to be disappointed by some of the features on this new model. A particular highlight is the fact this is one of very few models that allows you to unlock the car using the smartphone.

It works using near field communication, which essentially allows the car to communicate with the phone, and is accessible using the BMW Connected app. It also means several drivers can have access to your car without actually needing to have a physical key for it. Once the car has been unlocked by holding your smartphone next to the door, the X6 can be started by placing the phone in the wireless charger. The tech’s currently only available to those with the latest Samsung Galaxy models, though it’s set to be available on next-generation iPhones, too.

It helps with parking

Even if you’re a pro at car parking, manoeuvring something the size of the X6 can be quite a daunting task. But with the X6 available with self-parking functions, it can take all the stress out of the job. What’s more, if you’ve parked up, or have made a wrong turn into a confined area, the ‘reversing assistant’ is able to get you out of any trouble by storing the car’s steering movements for up to 50 metres, and then be able to do the opposite to help you.

Buy an X6 and you get your own personal assistant…

Yes, you read that right, the BMW X6 comes with its own ‘Intelligent Personal Assistant’. Think of it like Amazon’s Alexa or Apple Siri, in the sense that it’s operated using the words ‘Hey BMW’.

The assistant is also integrated into Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business – allowing the X6 to transform into a mobile office, and enabling you to join conference calls thanks to the voice assistant.
