5 reasons why you should test drive the new Ford Focus

One of Britain’s bestselling cars is back and it’s better than ever! Find out why you should be test driving the new Ford Focus.

The latest generation of the Ford Focus is touted to be the best yet, and with it being fitted with the latest tech, there are many reasons why you should be considering the family hatchback as your next vehicle.

Available in seven trim levels, it won’t be difficult to find the right Focus for you, so here are the main reasons why you should test drive the fourth generation hatchback.

New design allows for more space

Ford has extended the wheelbase of this model by 53 millimetres over the last version, which means more interior space. The Mk4 Focus comes with additional rear legroom and thanks to the shorter overhangs over each axle, the overall package is more practical. The design also gives the new Focus a fresh look that moves in-line with the rest of the Ford range and is much more modern than before.

You have four engines to choose from

Fitted with one of two petrol or two diesel engines, Ford gives you plenty of options to choose from. The 1.0-litre petrol EcoBoost is the smallest of the lot, while the 1.5-litre petrol is a new introduction that comes with 148bhp or 179bhp. The diesels on offer include a 1.5-litre unit with 94bhp or 123bhp guises and a 2.0-litre 148bhp option. Paired to either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, the range should be able to accommodate anyone’s taste.

Plenty of tech awaits

The simplified dashboard design means that navigating it is no issue, and the centrepiece is an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen that can support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside the SYNC 3 system. Alongside the FordPass mobile application, drivers will be able to use the Vehicle Locator, Vehicle Status and Remote Start features, as well as calling the emergency services in the case of an accident.

There are also plenty of safety systems available to the Focus, including the adaptive cruise control with stop & go, speed sign recognition and lane-centering assist, as well as adaptive front lighting and a head-up display. The active park assist 2 system can also park the car itself in either parallel or perpendicular parking spaces and takes control of the steering and speed. Other systems include evasive steering assist, blind spot assist with cross traffic alert, rear wide-view camera, wrong way alert and post-collision braking.

It’s still the best driver’s car in the segment

In what is a competitive segment, the Focus comes out on top in almost every category, including how it drives. The steering is accurate and has a good amount of feel to it, whilst the ride is well balanced and the suspension should be more than comfortable enough to soak up any and all bumps. The Focus is also available with adaptive suspension as an optional extra, which may be worth thinking about for the UK’s pothole-riddled roads.

There are three body styles to choose from

As well as the standard hatchback and estate options, this Focus is introducing the Active model, which comes with crossover looks and a higher ride height. Although that won’t be available for a little while yet, it is one worth considering when you look at the new Focus and would prefer a more imposing-looking machine.
