5 things you need to know about the Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen’s latest electric model is now available

Volkswagen’s radical electric car revolution is well underway with the ‘ID.’ range.

First up came the Golf-sized ID.3 hatchback, and now buyers can take a look at the ID.4 – a larger model that offers further appeal to this German brand’s range.

Here are five things you need to know about the Volkswagen ID.4

It’s Volkswagen’s first electric SUV

Previously all of Volkswagen’s electric models have been hatchbacks, with the e-Up!, e-Golf and more recently the ID.3. But now, buyers can choose a different body style in the form of the ID.4 SUV – the first electric SUV from the firm.

Like the majority of future Volkswagen Group EVs, it’s underpinned by the firm’s MEB platform that’s designed specifically for battery-powered models.

Hugely practical interior

A key advantage to using a platform specifically designed for electric cars is that there aren’t the same limitations as a conventional petrol or diesel car platform.

This is particularly important when it comes to practicality, with the ID.4 having a hugely roomy interior. Its boot measures a significant 543 litres (or 1,655 litres with the rear seats folded), while space throughout is plentiful – even taller adults will be able to get comfortable in the rear seats.

Long electric range

How far an electric car can travel between charges remains hugely important for buyers, and the ID.4 is ideal if you’re worried about running out of charge and want to complete long journeys with minimal fuss.

That’s because the ID.4 is capable of travelling up to 323 miles on a single charge thanks to its large 77kWh battery, which gives it one of the best ranges in its class.

Great rapid charging capability

And should you be carrying out any longer trips, it’s handy to know that the ID.4 is also equipped with impressive rapid charging capability, which means you won’t be stopped charging for long.

That’s because the full range is able to be topped up at a rate of up to 125kW, which Volkswagen says is enough for 199 miles of range to be added in as little as 30 minutes. As for charging at home, with a 7.2kW home charger wallbox, the battery can be replenished in 11 hours.

Plenty of choice, and more versions on the way

Even though the ID.4 has only just reached showrooms, it’s already available with a wide choice of options. Though it initially just debuted in a ‘1ST Edition’ form, Volkswagen has since introduced three new derivatives – Life, Family and Max.

All come very well-equipped, with Life featuring a 10-inch touchscreen, 30-colour ambient lighting and a heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Family then adds more stylish 19-inch alloy wheels, Matrix LED headlights and three-zone climate control. At the top of the range is the Max, which brings a larger 12-inch touchscreen, massaging electric seats and keyless entry.

While all ID.4 versions currently come with a 77kWh battery, Volkswagen has said this will soon be expanded with the option of a more affordable 52kWh option.

The Volkswagen ID.4 is on sale now, with prices starting from £40,800.
