50,000th Nissan LEAF built in Europe

The Nissan LEAF has impressively achieved a production landmark, with 50,000 examples having now been built in Europe.

The fully-electric Nissan LEAF has reached a new production landmark in Europe, after the 50,000th unit rolled off the production line at Nissan’s Sunderland plant.

The landmark LEAF built is a silver model in the Tekna trim and it put together last week for a customer in France.

Nissan’s factory in Sunderland is the first European production facility to build 50,000 electric vehicles and the batteries which power them.

Manufacturing of the Nissan LEAF and its batteries started back in 2013 and supports over 2,000 jobs at Nissan and its UK suppliers.

This year, Nissan launched a 250km-range version of its LEAF to Europe and announced future generation batteries will be built in Sunderland, with the aid of a £26.5 million investment.

The Chairman of Nissan Europe, Paul Willcox, said: “What Nissan is doing today with electric vehicle technology is more advanced than any other car manufacturer.”

UK Transport Minister, Andrew Jones, said: “This major milestone is great news for Nissan and yet another example of Britain leading the way in developing cleaner vehicle technology, which is good for the environment and supports jobs and growth.

“Our goal is for nearly every car to be zero emission by 2050 and we are investing £600 million in electric vehicles to make this a reality.”
