600bhp Bentley engine 'more efficient than any diesel'

Large engines like the 600bhp 6.0-litre W12 in the new Bentley Bentayga are just as efficient as smaller ones like Ford’s 1.0-litre Ecoboost according to a new study.

Emissions Analytics, a specialist in real-world vehicle emissions released its latest EQUA Air Quality Index, and found that bigger engines are just as capable of producing low emissions.

The Index scored the 1.0-litre Ford engine a top ‘A’ rating for low emissions, but perhaps surprisingly both the Bentayga engine and the 563bhp 6.6-litre V12 from the Rolls-Royce Dawn also earned ‘A’s.

More efficient than any Euro 6 diesel

Shockingly, Emissions Analytics’ data found that in real world applications, both the Bentley and the Rolls-Royce engines produce less harmful NOx than every single Euro 6 diesel engine on their Index list.

Emissions Analytics also stated that although the current 1.0-litre Ecoboost scored top marks, an earlier version of the same engine rated only an ‘E’ for its emissions.

Nick Molden, Emissions Analytics’ CEO and founder, said: “Both large and small displacement engines are capable of hitting the latest targets if correctly optimised.

'Cleaning up engine emissions'

“It’s encouraging to see that vehicle manufacturers are cleaning up engine emissions as part of a continuous development programme.”

What’s that, car manufacturers? Fewer diesels, and more V12s on the horizon? Don’t mind if we do!
