616bhp BMW M5 Competition revealed

Enhanced version of performance BMW 5 Series boasts more power, chassis tweaks and more aggressive styling.

Is the regular BMW M5 just not enough for you? Good news, there’s an even more hardcore version of the super saloon on the horizon to quench your thirst.

Introducing the M5 Competition. This isn’t merely a pack that can be specified unlike some M models before it, rather a distinct model with more power, an improved chassis and aggressive styling enhancements.

It’s still propelled by a 4.4-litre V8 engine, but here it’s uprated from the standard car’s 592bhp to 616bhp. Torque remains the same at 750Nm, but it’s now all available at a wider rev range, spreading from 1,800rpm to 5,800rpm — 200rpm more than before.

The result is an improved 0-60mph time of 3.1 seconds — a tenth quicker than the base car — while a 155mph top speed remains.

Helping to put that extra power to the road is a tweaked suspension setup. With this, the M5 Competition sits 7mm lower than the base machine, while front camber is also increased along with a stiffer rear anti-roll bar. The result is a 10 per cent stiffer car overall, with a variable damper controller included as standard.

To give the car a more aggressive look, the Competition receives a number of gloss black highlights — such as the kidney grille surround, rear spoiler, tailpipes and rear M5 badging. New 20-inch alloy wheels complete the package.

The BMW M5 Competition is now on sale, with prices starting from £96,205. Deliveries are expected to begin in September.
