7 Weird and Wonderful Car World Records

Admit it, we’ve all wanted to try and break a world record at some point. Some of them look so easy, right? Well, after reading our countdown to the weirdest car-related world records, you may think twice.

When you think of world records involving cars, large collections and parking manoeuvres may come to mind. But what about the guy that smashed car windows with his bare hands? Or the guy who spent millions on a registration plate?

After digging through the archives of the Guinness World Records website, we have found seven of the weirdest car-related world records ever. And some of them don’t even sound real!

Car Nearly Drives To The Height Of Everest

Ever had your ears pop while driving up a mountain? Well, you don’t know the half of it.

In 2007, Gonzalo Bravo and Eduardo Canales scaled the side of the Ojos Del Salado volcano in a modified Suzuki Samurai, achieving the world record for driving to the highest altitude by car.

They reached a height of 6,688 metres. To put that in perspective, Mount Everest’s peak is 8,848 metres high.

Most Times Hit By A Car In Two Minutes

Think you’ve had a bad day – I think this guy can top it.

In a controlled test, thank goodness, at the studios of Guinness World Records, Dietmar Loeffler claimed the accolade of most times hit by a car in two minutes by being hit eight times.

Imagine the insurance claim.

Most Expensive Car Registration

G4RY maybe? What about MR C001? Nope, the most expensive number plate ever sold contained just one digit – “1”.

This number plate was sold at an exclusive auction organised by Emirates Auction Company and was bought by Saeed Abdul Ghaffar Khouri for Dh52.2 million, which equates to £7.2 million.

In comparison, a plate like C003 DUD would cost you £250.

Most Car Windows Smashed With Hands

Sounds super human, right? Well, it took American Kevin Taylor just two minutes to smash 21 car windows back in 2013, allowing him to claim the title of most car door windows smashed using fists in two minutes.

As you can see in the video, Taylor attacks the panes of glass from above, crashing down on them in a Hulk-like manner, releasing a loud “Huhhh” when doing so.

Longest Car Skid

Think you’re a boy racer? Wait till you read this.

The world record for the longest car skid dates back to 1964 in Bonneville in Utah, USA. A jet-powered three-wheeler, called the Spirit of America, was driven out of control by Norman Craig Breedlove and began to skid, for nearly six miles!

In comparison, the longest car skid on a public road is 290 metres, made by a Jaguar during an accident on the M1 motorway in Bedfordshire, UK.

400 MINIs Beep Their Way To Deep Purple

Kicking off our list is a musical number, with the world record for the largest ensemble of car horns.

In August 2013, in Grand Rapids in St. Ignace, Michigan, 400 MINIs lined up to beep their horns. But they didn’t just beep once, or twice, or thrice. According to the record, the MINIs beeped their way through the classic rock song “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple.

Isn’t beeping your horn excessively against the law…

World’s Hairiest Car

To all the bald people of the world, this one’s for you.

The world record for the hairiest car goes to Maria Lucia Mugno, Valentino Stassano and their follicle Fiat 500. The little city car is covered in 120kg of natural hair and was weighed in at a public weighbridge in Italy in 2014.
