All-new 2020 Volkswagen Golf revealed

Iconic hatchback enters its eight-generation

Volkswagen has pulled the covers off its eight-generation Golf — in the nameplate’s most technically-advanced form yet.

Though its looks sleeker, sharper and more capacious than ever, the hatchback has stayed relatively compact in a world of ever-growing cars. At 4,284mm long, 1,789mm wide and 1,456mm tall, it’s almost identical in size to its predecessor.

New LED headlights technology adds a striking dynamic look to the car, while inside it is more futuristic than ever, thanks to large 10.25-inch infotainment system and VW’s Active Info Display included as standard.

A new voice control system has been introduced that’s said to respond to natural voice commands, while Amazon’s Alex assistant will also function within the car for those with compatible smart home devices.

At launch in the UK, a range of petrol and diesel powertrains will be offered — as well as a sole plug-in hybrid with the high-performance GTE trim at a later date.

Other trims offered at launch include S, SE, SEL and R-Line. Exact specifications and pricing for each will be revealed closer to its arrival on our shores.

In the not-so-distant future, the line-up will be expanded with the GTI, GTI TCR, GTD and R performance models.

In terms of safety equipment, Volkswagen will offer a comprehensive package for the Golf. Individual tech includes lane keep assistance, ‘Front Assist’ area monitoring, active pedestrian protection, ParkPilot parking assistance, a cornering assist function for the LED headlights and adaptive cruise control — among others.

Expect to hear more on exact UK availability for the new Volkswagen Golf as it nears its market launch at the end of this year.
