All new Suzuki Swift unveiled in Japan, Swift Sport to follow

Suzuki has unveiled the latest iteration of the popular Swift supermini in Japan, ahead of the car’s official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The Swift, Suzuki’s top-selling compact car, has been given a complete overhaul with all-new underpinnings and a wheelbase that’s been extended by 20mm to increase interior space.

It’s also got fresh new looks, which aren’t entirely dissimilar to the outgoing model but which look a lot sleeker than before, and it can’t be just us that sees a hint of Jaguar F-Type in the new front grille.

Three doors are no longer an option and the new Swift will be available as a five-door only, but it’s due to get new equipment in the form of adaptive cruise control and semi-autonomous braking.

New Swift Sport due in 2018

The car will also share powertrains with its slightly larger Baleno sibling, with the option of either a 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine or a ‘mild hybrid’ that combines a 1.2-litre engine with an electric motor.

An all-new version of the Swift Sport is just around the corner too, with a leaked brochure from Japan offering the first look at the updated hot hatch, which is expected to go on sale in 2018.

Power for the Swift Sport will come from the same 138bhp 1.4-litre version of the Boosterjet that powers the Vitara S, making it slightly more powerful than the current version.

Following its official public unveiling in Geneva, the all-new Suzuki Swift hatchback is expected to go on sale in Europe towards the end of this year.
