Apollo Edition Ford Mustang to be auctioned for charity

Ford has teamed up with Californian automotive design house MAD Industries to create a unique new special edition Mustang that’s due to be auctioned off for charity.

Named the Apollo Edition, the one-of-a-kind model has been created to pay homage to NASA’s Apollo spaceflight program and to raise money for a variety of youth education projects.

Edsel B. Ford II, Henry Ford’s great-grandson, said: “The Apollo program delivered astonishing innovations in technology and achieved a national goal of landing the first human on the moon.

“With this year’s stunning Apollo Edition Mustang, we salute that spirit of American ingenuity with the quintessential American automobile – Ford Mustang.”

Based on the standard 5.0-litre V8-powered Mustang GT, the Apollo Edition Mustang features a one-off black and white paint scheme to pay tribute to the look of the iconic Space Shuttle.

Ford’s technicians also added a sizeable carbon fibre front splitter and rear diffuser, plus a gloss black rear spoiler and unique LED underbody lighting, designed to symbolise the appearance of atmospheric re-entry.

Other enhancements include a performance package which adds on a supercharger that boosts output to an insane 618bhp, sports suspension, Brembo brakes and 21-inch Forgiato wheels.

Inside, the space-faring theme continues with exclusive interior details like a modified instrument cluster, unique sill plates and patches from each Apollo mission embroidered on the seats.

Earlier this week, another link between Ford and NASA was revealed after Ford’s engineers announced that the Shelby GT350R’s wheels were created using exclusive NASA technology.

The GT350R uses carbon fibre wheels treated with the same aerospace-grade ceramic coating used on the Space Shuttle’s engines, making it the first and only car in the world to come with wheels of this type.

Although the Apollo Edition is a unique one-off, Ford released a new interactive video yesterday that puts viewers behind the wheel of the new Ford Mustang being put through its paces at Silverstone.

Six GoPro cameras mounted on the inside means viewers can access a full 360-degree look inside the world’s most iconic muscle car, and can also seamlessly switch between interior and exterior shots.

On sale in the UK for the first time in its 50-year history, the Ford Mustang is available to order now, with prices starting from £28,995 and first deliveries due to arrive this autumn.
