As with the other models in both A6 and A7 ranges, the 40 TDI engine is part of a mild-hybrid setup that uses a belt alternator starter to recover energy under braking and can allow the car to coast between speeds of 34mph and 99mph.

For the A6 Saloon and A7 Sportback, the engine allows both cars to reach a top speed of 152mph, while the A6 Avant estate model can achieve 149mph. All models can go from 0-60mph in around eight seconds.

All of the models with this engine can achieve upwards of 60mpg.
