Audi announces Charging Service for e-tron launch

The new service gives e-tron owners access to more than 72,000 charging points across 16 EU countries.

Audi has announced a new electric vehicle charging service that will allow owners of the new e-tron to use thousands of charging points across Europe.

The Audi e-tron Charging Service will give drivers unlimited access to over 72,000 points provided by 220 operators across 16 countries – with owners able to use 150kW fast-charging stations.

That means Audi e-tron drivers can use close to 80 per cent of all charging points across Western and Central Europe. Eight further countries in Eastern Europe will be added to the network for further electric vehicle coverage.

All the drivers need to do is sign up to the service under a single contract basis and they will receive a card that gives them access to the charging points – with all of the charging transactions billed together at the end of each month.

Customers can view where and when they used charging points through the myAudi portal, as well as manage their contract and review their monthly bills.

Audi will introduce the plug & charge function in 2019, which will use cryptographic procedures to automatically authorise charging to begin without the need for a card – with all e-tron models built from the middle of next year fitted with this function as standard.

With the e-tron being introduced later this year, this service will also be offered to drivers of the e-tron Sportback and e-tron GT when they are released in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Fermin Soneira, Audi head of product marketing, said: “With the e-tron Charging Service, we are actually offering a premium charging service ahead of the Audi e-tron’s market introduction.

“The product is tailored to the needs of our customers. We will be steadily expanding the service hand in hand with our strong partner Digital Charging Solutions.”

The e-tron is being revealed on September 17 in San Francisco.
