Audi announces new plug-in TFSI e models

The petrol-electric plug-in hybrids will come with an electric range of 25 miles and all will be released this year.

Audi has revealed that it will be giving four of its models plug-in hybrid powertrains this year under the new ‘TFSI e’ name.

After previous plug-in hybrid models used the ‘e-tron’ nomenclature – which is now used on the brand’s all-electric range – the new naming strategy and hybrid systems will initially be used on the A6, A7 Sportback, A8 and Q5.

Each model comes with a 14.1kWh battery pack paired to an electric motor, which can go 25 miles on a single charge – with the cars also featuring energy recovering technology.

On the flagship A8, the plug-in comes in the form of the 60 TFSI e, which teams a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine with the electric setup – together developing 442bhp and 700Nm of torque. It also comes with quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

For the A6, A7 and Q5, Audi pairs the electric motor with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine and it comes in the guises of the 50 and 55 TFSI e. The former develops 295bhp as the regular option, while the 55 iteration produces 362bhp for a performance-angled alternative. Both options are paired to a seven-speed automatic and quattro.

Drivers will have the choice of three driving modes – EV, Auto and Hold – with the latter acting as the petrol-only mode by ‘holding’ the battery charge at the time to save it for driving around town later.

With the efficiency assist system, drivers will get haptic prompts from the accelerator pedal when in EV mode so that they can drive as efficiently as possible.

All four models will be on display at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, which starts next week, and all will go on sale by the end of the year.
