Audi e-tron GT: Audi's rival to the Tesla Model S

We take a look at the concept model that will be coming into production in 2020 and will be a major challenger to the Tesla Model S.

In the electric motoring world, the Tesla Model S is the leading saloon in the segment and there isn’t anything that can really challenge it right now.

However, Audi is starting to introduce its e-tron all-electric line-up and one of which has the potential to match its appeal – the GT.

Although it is currently a concept, the e-tron GT is expected to be a worthy challenger to current fuel-powered saloons and Tesla’s Model S when it eventually arrives on the scene.

Here is what you need to know about Audi’s e-tron GT…

Performance and powertrain

With the GT set to go on sale at some point in 2020, it is expected that battery technology will have advanced enough to allow the model to come with a 90 kWh lithium-ion pack built into the chassis. Audi claims with that power on-board, the GT will be able to do more than 250 miles on a single charge – while placing the battery between the axles will provide a low centre of gravity for sports car-like handling.

The power will be directed to two electric motors – one mounted on each axle – to drive all four wheels, and with that setup Audi claims the GT would be able to do 0-60mph in under 3.5 seconds – however the top speed would be limited to 149mph to optimise range.

Charging

Audi claims that the GT will be introduced with wireless charging capabilities, so rather than having the hassle of plugging the car into the wall, drivers can simply park over a charging pad and use inductive charging to replenish the battery pack. If that isn’t possible, the GT’s 11 kW charging output allows it to be charged overnight from a standard socket.

With fast-charging also available to it, the e-tron GT can be charged up to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes – meaning a range of almost 200 miles after that time.

Cabin

Although it is still in the concept phase, it’s likely that the e-tron GT will come with a mostly digital interior – featuring an instrument display behind the steering wheel and a touchscreen infotainment system in the middle of the cabin. With no transmission tunnel either, the interior should be spacious and allow for lots of legroom – while storage compartments at both the front and back of the car will allow for more than 550 litres of storage space.
