Audi Q2 compact crossover debuts at Geneva

Audi has unveiled its new Q2 model at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, a shrunk-down and more compact version of cars like the Q3 and Q5.

Despite the fact that the dinky Q2 is smaller than an A3 Sportback and weighs just 1,205kg, it still comes with a rugged design and plenty of capability courtesy of optional Quattro four-wheel drive.

Audi’s signature grille sits on the front of the new crossover, while the car also features large air inlets and a dynamic, sporty design with a low roof and R8-inspired blades on the C-pillars.

Dynamic and well-equipped

Riding on 17- or 19-inch alloys, it measures in at 1.51 metres tall and 1.79 metres wide, the Q2 also features short overhangs and a 2.6-metre wheelbase to make the most of its interior space.

Inside, the Q2 comes kitted out with a wide array of features, including an MMI infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plus optional sat-nav and in-car Wi-Fi.

Drivers can choose various custom options for the interior trim and seat upholstery, while Audi’s virtual cockpit TFT dials, heads-up display and LED ambient lighting features are optional.

Remarkably practical interior

Despite the car’s smaller size, its design means that it’s still remarkably practical, with a roofline that maximises headroom and a boot with a maximum cargo volume of up to 1,050 litres.

From launch, buyers will be able to choose from a total of five engines, including a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, plus two four-cylinder petrols in either 1.4-litre or 2.0-litre sizes.

Diesel options include one 1.6-litre and one 2.0-litre engine, and although performance figures have yet to be announced, the larger diesel comes with the option of permanent four-wheel drive.

Comprehensive engine list

Six-speed manual gearboxes feature across the range, while Audi also offers a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission for all engines or a newly-developed dual-clutch option for the larger petrol.

Finally, adaptive dampers are available as an option along with the Audi drive select system, which allows drivers to tailor the car’s ride and setup to suit their driving conditions.

Prices for the new Audi Q2 range have yet to be released, but order books are scheduled to open in July, with the first deliveries expected to arrive with customers from this November onwards.
