Audi reveals new Q5 and RS 3 saloon in Paris

Audi has made two big reveals at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, including the new Q5 SUV and a saloon version of the RS 3.

The Q5 is set to launch in spring 2017, while the RS 3 saloon is set to follow during the summer of the same year.

Second-generation Q5

The new Q5’s exterior has similar design features to Audi’s latest Q2 and Q7 SUVs, particularly when observing the LED headlights and distinctive front grille. The car has also lost a lot of weight compared to its predecessor, as much as 90kg in fact.

Its internal components are based heavily on those used in the latest A4 saloon. Most of its weight loss is achieved through the use of the VW Group’s MLB platform which both the A4 and Q7 use.

Audi also says that the new Q5’s design makes it one of the most aerodynamic cars in its class and delivers exceptionally low wind noise and very little cabin vibrations while being driven.

Speaking of the cabin, the new Q5 features a seven-inch display screen onboard as standard. Higher trims will have a larger 8.3-inch screen or a 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit display.

Engines for the new Audi Q5 will include a 2.0-litre diesel with outputs of 148bhp, 161bhp and 187bhp. Also on offer will be a 249bhp 2.0-litre petrol and 282bhp 3.0-litre diesel. A hybrid version of the new Q5, as well as performance-focused SQ5 and RS Q5 models, are also reportedly part of Audi’s plans.

RS 3 adds saloon variant and boasts 394bhp

As well as showing its new Q5, Audi has also revealed a brand-new saloon version of its RS 3 performance car in Paris.

It’s based on the original five-door RS 3 Sportback but, as you’d expect, it has the same saloon shape as the Audi A3 Saloon. The more aggressive bodywork which includes an aerodynamic blade across the bottom of the front bumper and a distinct diffuser, ensures this car stands out next to A3 saloon.

The RS 3 Saloon uses the same 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine which features in Audi’s TT RS and it produces a whopping 394bhp. Power is sent to all four wheels with the aid of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The zero to 62mph sprint in the RS 3 Saloon takes just 4.1 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. There’s an option to increase the top speed to 174mph however.

Highlights of the interior include a flat-bottomed steering wheel, illuminated door sills and a digital dashboard which can show current info on tyre pressure, torque and G-forces.
