Audi unveils new crossover based on the A1: The A1 Citycarver

The A1 Citycarver aims to join the rising number of ‘rugged’ superminis

Audi has revealed its new A1 Citycarver – a higher-up, ‘off-road’ version of the popular supermini.

Based on the German manufacturer’s standard A1 Sportback, the Citycarver adds four centimetres of ground clearance courtesy of a new suspension setup and larger alloy wheels.

The Citycarver also features off-road styling that aims to reflect that of Audi’s ‘Q’ SUVs.

A revised front bumper is one of many alterations, along with new side sills and wheelarch cladding, which is painted in a contrasting colour to the rest of the car. Silver underbody protection also aims to give the impression of ruggedness.

As for the cabin, it’s much the same as the regular A1, with a large touchscreen dominating the dashboard alongside optional digital dials. Buyers can also choose to personalise the interior with a contrasting colour, as is the case with the car pictured.

Standard equipment includes LED headlights, an S line roof spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The SE, Sport and S line trim levels from the standard A1 are expected to remain, although the Citycarver will command a price increase over the Sportback.

Audi will also offer a first edition model, which will come painted in Arrow Grey or Pulse Orange, along with 18-inch alloy wheels. It will also feature a black styling pack, tinted lights and orange accents throughout the interior.

The engine choice is likely to remain similar to the standard A1, with buyers able to choose between turbocharged 1.0-, 1.5- and 2.0-litre engines, delivering power outputs from 94bhp to 197bhp.

Order books for the A1 Citycarver will open at the start of August, with first deliveries expected in the autumn.
