Behold, the carbon fibre skeleton of McLaren’s newest Super Series cars

McLaren is about to enter a new era in March, when it will unveil the first new models in its second generation Super Series range at the Geneva Motor Show.

Late last year, McLaren announced it would invest a massive £1 billion into the development of 15 new models, in an effort to further increase the success of the growing supercar manufacturer.

Key to McLaren’s success is the Super Series, its core range which includes such models as the 650S and the 675LT, and a host of second-gen cars is scheduled to be introduced from this year onwards.

Details of the all-new Super Series cars are scant, but McLaren has unveiled the first image of its new Monocage II, the carbon fibre skeleton which will underpin every new Super Series model.

Ultra-lightweight, McLaren says that Monocage II will make the new cars as much as 18kg lighter than current models, while also lowering the centre of gravity for better handling.

The manufacturer says that Monocage II will also allow for wider cabins and more interior space, along with better all-round visibility.

According to earlier statements from the company, at least half of its 15 new cars will use variations of the hybrid engine technology pioneered on the flagship P1 hypercar.

This will also mark the first time that McLaren Automotive will refresh its model lineup, given that it only started officially building cars in 2011 with the introduction of the first Super Series car, the 12C.

McLaren’s CEO Mike Flewitt said: “This is the first time we have replaced a product family and the new Super Series will be absolutely true to McLaren’s pioneering spirit in being a revolutionary leap forwards, both for our brand and the supercar segment.”

Full details of the all-new, second-generation Super Series models will be announced at Geneva in March, along with further images, pricing and specification information.
