Best cars on two wheels

After a Range Rover Sport SVR smashed the time for fastest hill climb on two wheels at Goodwood, we take a look at other cars that attempted the stunt.

As cars are mostly vehicles of the four-wheeled variety, it can be a bit disconcerting seeing one balanced on just half that while navigating around a track.

Well, some skilled daredevils do exactly that, combining balance and control, as well as having to judge the surface of the road on the fly.

Here are some of the best feats of cars on two wheels…

Stunt driver Terry Grant – who features another two times on this list – set one of the fastest time for a two-wheel speed run up the Goodwood hill climb at the 2018 Festival of Speed. At the wheel of the latest Range Rover Sport SVR, Grant was able to navigate a mile of the course in 2:24.5. Using a ramp to get up on two wheels, the car’s only modification was to increase the pressure of the tyres on the road, and after four attempts over the four-day event, Grant was able to get a faultless run on his last go.

This run is Terry Grant’s best attempt up the famous hill climb to date – a 2:10 run set at the wheel of a Nissan Juke Nismo RS. Here, Grant took 45 seconds off his previous best time from 2011, with the powerful small crossover able to navigate the mile with great poise. It was Grant’s first attempt of the festival as well, making it extra special.

If going up a mile course wasn’t tricky enough, Yue Han, a Chinese stunt driver, managed to lap the whole 12.9-mile Nürburgring circuit on two wheels – going around the undulating course tucked up in the German Eifel mountains. The Mini needed a welded front differential, a solid rubber front tyre and a roll cage to make it stable, and although you may not expect a quick lap – it took 45 minutes to get around. At an average speed of 17mph, it wasn’t the fastest lap around the circuit, but it’s definitely one of the most impressive.

This attempt wasn’t about the fastest time; this was to showcase the precision of driving a car on two wheels. Terry Grant took the Jaguar up the Goodwood hill climb back in 2016, and this time was joined by motorbike stunt rider Lee Bowers – who got out of the passenger side window and stood on the side of the car while it was balancing and driving on two wheels.
