BMW bucks market trends to grow sales in first half of 2019

The German manufacturer recorded its best ever sales for the first half of the year

The BMW Group has continued to grow its sales in the first six months of 2019, with more than 1.25 million vehicles being registered across the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands so far this year.

Despite a downturn in markets around the world – including the UK – BMW managed to increase its sales by 0.8 per cent in the first half of 2019, with a total of 1,252,837 sales recorded for the three brands. That’s the first time the Group has exceeded 1.25m sales in the first six months of a year. Sales for the month of June also grew by 0.7 per cent compared with last year.

The BMW brand itself is showing the largest volume growth, with sales rising by 1.6 per cent so far in 2019. It’s the ‘X’ range of SUVs that is proving to be the most fruitful, with these accounting for 43.4 per cent of BMW’s overall sales. The X3 and X4 models are recording the largest growth in terms of individual models.

It’s also positive news for BMW’s electrified vehicles, with sales of ‘i’ models rising by 22 per cent so far in 2019, while sales of the 530e plug-in hybrid and i3 EV increased the most.

Elsewhere, MINI recorded a small drop in sales, but with the announcement earlier this week of the new Electric model, that should raise fresh interest in the brand. More than 40,000 customers have already expressed their interest in this new British-built EV.

Luxury brand Rolls-Royce might deal with much smaller units than BMW and MINI, but the Sussex-based manufacturer is seeing massive demand so far in 2019. In the first half of the year, 2,534 Rolls-Royces were sold – an increase of 42.3 per cent. The new Cullinan SUV is undoubtedly where this growth has risen from, with strong demand for this new model from around the world.
