BMW i8 sports car production doubled

Media reports have confirmed that BMW is increasing production of its i8 hybrid sports car in order to keep up with huge demand.

The German manufacturer is doubling the number of i8 models which rolls out of its production factory on a daily basis. The BMW i8 is built at a facility in Leipzig and from now on 20 units a day, instead of 10, will be assembled at this site.

Reportedly, this increase in daily production will dramatically cut down waiting lists for the BMW i8 down to four months, from as high as 18 months in some parts of the world. Since its launch last year, just over 1,740 units of the i8 have been sold to customers.

The BMW i8, currently priced from £104,590, is the second production model to arrive from BMW’s efficiency-focused sub-brand ‘BMW i’, following the i3 hatchback launched back in 2013.

Combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a battery-charged electric motor, the i8 produces 357bhp and delivers a 0-62mph sprint time of just 4.4 seconds. It can also hit a top speed of 155mph and yet its official combined fuel economy is 135mpg, while CO2 output is at a mere 49g/km, meaning free Vehicle Excise Duty.
