BMW reveals new iDrive media system to digitalise its cars further

The new setup will first appear on the brand’s upcoming iX and i4 electric cars

BMW has revealed its new iDrive infotainment system in full, which will go on to power the brand’s latest cars.

The firm’s iDrive has now been around for two decades – debuting on the 2001 7 Series – and since then it’s continued to evolve. The current system is based on BMW’s latest operating system, and aims to “take the interaction between driver and vehicle into a digital future”.

This new iDrive will be rolled out across future BMWs, but is first appearing on the new iX and i4 electric models – impressing with its new displays, controls and software, while also coming with an enhanced voice recognition service, which BMW is hoping drivers will use more readily.

It also benefits from a main new curved media system, which promises to be quicker than before, and also available with over-the-air updates to ensure it’s always up to speed with the latest technology. The new iDrive can also accept 5G networks, with this level of connectivity allowing for more ‘real-time’ information, including when it comes to traffic and parking information.

The new setup consists of a 14.9-inch touchscreen system, as well as a large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, with both displaying new graphics. Both are angled towards the driving and are free-standing displays in the dashboard, rather than being integrated.

Both the iX and i4 are set to arrive at the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022, with brand new BMW models going forward also set to benefit, too.
